you may very well be right.

For a very different reason, Itanium is already a huge success for Intel from a furure revenue growth standpoint. It has already put away SGI, CPQ-Alpha and (alomst) PA-RISC processor designs. IBM doesn't seem very focussed on its processor like it once was and I wonder how long SUNW can keep pumping money into their processor design. Which leaves only AMD as a viable competitor as a processor company. Even if Itanium turns out to be a headfake, it may have done its jobs in terms of helping Intels future bottom line.
