I agree that they are a major hazard. Absolutely no argument there. If they engines had failed from the intake of birds, I just don't believe that it could cause the disintegration of the plane. The designers of the planes know that the engines are going to suck up a certain number of birds. And where they can't design the engine to continue functioning after sucking up an ostrich, they can design it to fail in a "safe" way. The plane disintegrating after sucking up a bird is not a "safe" failure. And if it was a design flaw, I would expect to hear about a lot more plane disintegrations from bird ingestion than we have.
