I seem to recall that when they had the problems with engines on the DC-10s a while back, some innards of the engine (notice my sophisticated understanding of jet engines) flew out and cut hydraulic lines and also cut into the body of the planes. I suppose if the plane found itself at a strange attitude, forces could cause parts to break off.

I remember them having problems with birds getting sucked into engines at JFK way back when it was still Idewild and jets were a novelty. Way back then, they built all these airports outside the cities on land that was either dumps or swamps, as wetlands were called then, thinking that those lands weren't good for anything else and there were no nearby homes to suffer from the noise. Apparently no one thought about the birds. I remember they used to shoot cannons to scare them away but the birds got used to the noise.

I've been away for a while. Hope they've found the data recorder by now so they can figure this out.
