Anyway, the pilots were able to control the plane through the use of the throttles on the remaining engines enough that they got the plane to the airport and crash landed there.

I recall that. They made a movie out of it. I think their problems started when they were at altitude and had some breathing room to figure out how to handle it. Right after take off, at just 3k feet, it would be nearly impossible for a pilot to recover.

The birds are a problem mostly at coastal airports. Death by bird really is an ignoble way to go. Stick to flying around the middle of the country. <g>
