Cubic Wins $2 Million Personnel Locator Systems Contract from Air National Guard

and Air Force Reserve

Business Editors & Aerospace/Defense Writers

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 13, 2001--Cubic Defense Systems,
a subsidiary of San Diego-based Cubic Corp. (AMEX:CUB), has won an
approximately $2 million contract to supply Personnel Locator Systems
and installation kits to the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve.
The systems will be placed aboard Air Force A-10 aircraft with
delivery expected to be completed in early 2002.
"Cubic's data link and avionics group continue to provide
state-of-the-art tactical systems during this time of heightened
operational readiness," said Craig Campbell, director of Business
Development for Tactical Electronics Products. "For several years, we
have been working with the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve in
hopes of securing this business. Our Personnel Locator System will
enable A-10 crews to get to the survivor's position very quickly to
provide close air support if the survivor needs it."
Cubic's Personnel Locator System (PLS) is the standard avionics
system installed on U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force aircraft for
search-and-rescue operations. The PLS units provide a jam-resistant
radio communications link between rescuers and downed pilots that
allows crews to pinpoint the location of the survivors in a single
pass under challenging operational conditions.
George Benedict, PLS program manager, said deliveries started in
September with shipment of the first system to verify system
installation and operation in the A-10 aircraft. Additional deliveries
will continue from November through March 2002 for installation on
aircraft at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., and Bradley Field, Conn.
Benedict said the systems shipped so far are part of a PLS
inventory build currently underway at the San Diego facility.
"Although this order was for 24 PLS electronics systems, a total
of 96 installation kits were ordered," he said. "This allows the
customer to order additional PLS electronics systems in the future
that will just 'drop in' the pre-wired A-10 aircraft."
Cubic Defense Systems is part of the Cubic Defense Group, which
provides instrumented air and ground combat training systems, battle
command training simulations, and simulation support for U.S. and
allied military forces. The Group also produces high technology
avionics, data links and communications products for government and
commercial customers and provides a wide range of technical and
logistics services.
The corporation's other major segment, Cubic Transportation
Systems, designs and manufactures automatic fare collection systems
for public mass transit authorities worldwide.
