Are you saying that, based on the basic beliefs of Islam WRT Allah, there cannot be a religious war? I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around that, as I'm used to the "God is on our side" fantasy and excuse for war, I guess.

Theoretically there could be. It would have to be a defensive engagement to a war being waged to destroy Islam. Regional disputes don't qualify. It would require some effort to wipe out the idea and practice of Islamic worship. When Islam was new in Arabia 1400 years ago, this was actually attempted. The group was small enough and homogenous enough that a battle could be waged against the shebang.

Someone could make a bad joke or even out-and-out say they want the Islamic religion to be destroyed. This would justify verbal rebuttal, but not nukes. When the percieved attack ends the retaliatory retort must also end.

Jihad is a perspective on life, not an event. Unfortunately, the typical Muslim is about as knowledgeable about Islam as the typical Christian is about Christianity. So when the money guys start to hollar, ....well....draw your own conclusions, but its more about drawing a line in the sand to be "with us or agin us" than it is about what you believe in.
