Your response illustrates my point. Windows 95 (i.e. 6+ year old OS) is not exactly what I'd call recently obsolete.

For the record, take a look at the side of the box on one of the newest Microsoft products, Office XP. You can run Office XP on Windows 98, ME, NT 4, and XP.
The only thing missing is Win 95, which again, is over 6 years old...

I'm not saying that the compatibility\support story is perfect, just that it is a lot better and more consumer friendly than your original post may have led the reader to believe.
