How to determine? You picked the wrong person to ask, I'm still a novice.

I don't look for anything fancy, just basic stuff such as
% drop from the last peak,
volume,
EMA,
and ratio of Nas/QQQ to feel the sentiment of the Q traders.
Of course FOMC and other big news have to be factored in also.
But I would give most weight on chart pattern itself.
We can call it 'pattern recognition'
I don't know how to explain this part.
After reviewing thousands of charts, some patterns seem to repeat more often.
Drawing future chart helps too. Where the market will be in 1 week, 1 month, and 3 month....
Unlike 10 days ago, now 6 mo. or 1 year chart looks bullish. 6 mo. Nas chart projection shows top to be around 2020 before turn south.

I think T/A is somewhere between science(statistic) and art.

Did you major in math?
What is your success rate with 5 bar method?
I would consider anything over 60% to be excellent.

What I like to do is input millions of chart itself to a computer then program the computer to recognize certain pattern and predict the future trend. I think the computer needs certain level of AI(artificial intelligence) to do this job...
