Everyone's a novice.

No, i'm a programmer, and tend to approach this using algorithms. Linear regression is fancy name for finding a best-fit line for a series of points. It's built in MetaStock just like moving average and MACD. It's like a moving average, but switches direction quickly and without whip sawing as much as EMA on a tight setting. Linear regression was the closest thing to zigzag i could find. Tushar Chande talks about linear regression in his book "The New Technical Trader".

It's a work in progress, have not traded with it yet. PM your e-mail address and i'll send you chart and code.

John Murphy puts out an addin for Metastock to do auto pattern recognition. Have not tried it, so no idea if it is any good.
