Bush, Putin Agree to Slash Nuclear Arms

President Bush announced yesterday that the United States will reduce its arsenal of deployed nuclear warheads by more than two-thirds over the next decade, turning one of the final pages in the Cold War history of the last half-century.

This is lost among today's terrorism problems, but is the most significant step away from global destruction in 50 years. Nuclear weapons, along with the more remote threat of asteroid impact, are still the likeliest way to anihilate humanity from this planet. If we can stay on the path of destroying our nuclear weapons, and get them down to a level where we can deter terrorists, then we can talk about perhaps ridding the world of nukes altogether, which is the only way that mankind will have a chance to survive in the long run.

Unfortunately, in the meantime we will waste another 100B or so on useless hit-to-kill missile defense systems.
