I was born and raised in England and moved to the USA in 1981 after spending several years working in the Middle East and Africa. I was involved in a "sit-in" at Nottingham University when I was there(1969-1972), but the anti-establishment struggles during the Vietnam era were never as strong in England as they were in the USA, for obvious reasons. We weren't being sent to fight and die in a war that we didn't believe in.
The WTC attacks (we can't really call them bombings unless we consider the planes to be bombs) were definitely the deciding factor in starting this war, but I wouldn't say that says it all.
If we weren't dependent on Middle East oil then we wouldn't be so concerned with that area and we wouldn't have troops in Saudi Arabia. Which is why I can't understand that people still object to us becoming less dependent on foreign oil by drilling in ANWR and offshore Florida and California. As a general statement, Republicans want us to drill more, Democrats want us to use less oil. I say "Let's do both."
BTW, what do you think about Bush being so friendly with Putin? At least, it shows that not just our ex-allies can become enemies, but also that our ex-enemies can become allies.
