This is very true. However, making money should be the only reason you trade a stock, long or short. Further, there is nothing inherently wrong about going short on a stock.

Do you feel that it is wrong just because the vast majority of people invest on the long side and thus more are harmed economically when a stock price falls?

When you buy a stock someone is on the other side of that trade that believes it will not advance. The belief can be explicit in the form of shorting or implicit in the form of exiting a long position. Nothing evil or corrupt, just a different opinion regarding future potential.

I find it curious that you attach some sort of guilt from profiting from investing/trading endeavors.
