I agree, sabotage is more likely now. I note the airframe on that A300 was 13 years old, which is not very old for structural problems. I found this:

The average airplane in the U.S. general aviation fleet is approximately 34 years old, according to FAA. In the next ten years, FAA said, this average age is expected to rise to more than 41 years old. By the year 2019, the average general aviation airplane will be almost 50 years old.
