Solution Would Enable Wireless Carriers to Provision and Update Wireless Applications Over the Air
QUALCOMM Incorporated QCOM, pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that they have selected the IBM(R) J9 "Java Powered" CLDC and MIDP-compliant Java virtual machine environment, for QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless platform. The implementation the companies are collaborating on would enable wireless carriers to provision and update over the air a fully compliant Java virtual machine, bringing to carriers who want to offer a Java technology solution to their subscribers the advantages of the complete BREW solution, including the distribution and payment components of the BREW Distribution System.
"IBM's J9 virtual machine environment is the perfect answer for carriers who recognize the value of the solution QUALCOMM offers with the BREW platform, and who also want to take advantage of the excellent applications work of the Java development community," said Peggy Johnson, president of QUALCOMM Internet Services division. "QUALCOMM has recognized from the beginning of its BREW development efforts the need to provide carriers a virtual machine solution on top of the BREW platform and the need to give Java developers the opportunity to join the large C/C++ developer community and participate in the worldwide consumer and business applications market that the BREW initiative is enabling. QUALCOMM's work with IBM addresses both these needs perfectly."
"The combination of the IBM J9 virtual machine environment and the BREW platform provides carriers and developers with a complete infrastructure for the building, testing and provisioning of applications," said Paul Buck, president and CEO of Object Technology International (an IBM Company) and director of IBM's Embedded Systems Group. "The work IBM is doing with QUALCOMM clearly demonstrates the synergies between the BREW platform and virtual machine environments for wireless devices. This J9-BREW implementation, along with a 'plug in' to the award-winning VisualAge Micro Edition, will enable our customers to extend e-business applications fully into the wireless space."
IBM's J9 Java virtual machine environment is expected to be available for carrier deployment early in 2002. It will make available to carriers a solution for providing applications to their subscribers from the established Java development community, while optimizing performance via the advanced features of the BREW applications platform and the BREW Distribution System.
Carriers will be able to provision and update J9 to BREW-enabled handsets over the air. Developers writing wireless Java applications for this CLDC MIDP-compliant virtual machine will then be able to offer their applications to carriers for over-the-air downloads by subscribers, while enjoying the business benefits of aggregated payment for their applications through the BREW Distribution System.
The IBM J9 virtual machine is a high-performance, production environment for the deployment of J2ME applications. In August 2001, IBM was the first vendor to develop and distribute the J9 J2ME "Java Powered" environment across multiple platforms simultaneously. The J9 virtual machine has been proven in independent testing to provide a high performance, compact environment for running embedded Java applications. Together with VisualAge Micro Edition, J9 allows developers to quickly and easily create and deploy e-business applications to hand-held computers, PDA's and cellular telephones. More information is available at www.ibm.com/embedded.
QUALCOMM's BREW platform is a thin, standardized execution environment that resides in handsets. QUALCOMM's BREW initiative is the only approach that offers developers, OEMs and carriers a complete, end-to-end solution for wireless applications development, device configuration, application distribution, and billing and payment. The complete BREW solution includes the BREW Software Development Kit (SDK) for developers, the BREW application platform and porting tools for device manufacturers, and the BREW Distribution System (BDS) that enables developers and their carrier customers to get applications to market and coordinates the billing and payment processes for them. Carriers' BREW-based services will enable consumers to customize their handsets by downloading applications over the air from a carrier's application download server. <<
