Midway between the two rattling sounds, the captain can be heard remarking that he was encountering the wake of a plane ahead of him, he said.

Now, if I were the pilot and I felt some shuddering in the airframe, the first thing that I would think of is wake turbulence. The last thing that would cross my mind is that my tail is coming off. But I bet that the process of the tail coming off will make the airframe rattle a bit. IMO, they are concentrating on what the pilot said too much. The preceding plane was 8 miles ahead of the A300, this is 3 miles further than FAA standards (thanks MrLucky for the info).

Once they figure out why the vertical stabalizer sheered, they are going to have to explain how this would make *both* engines fall off too.

I have seen photos of plane crashes where the engines are still attached to the wing after the crash. I am guessing that the force encountered on an impact is greater than any force that the engine can encounter in the air.
