<<There were two items that jumped out: first that the ISP had to have ATM (please explain --- I take it PacBell's an ATM system) and secondly that PacBell might lease the modems.>>

I believe Beth at PacBell said that ATM (Asynchronous transfer Mode) technology MUST be used by the ISP to connect up the ADSL correctly. I believe that some ISPs perhaps don't have that link. I am not sure.

She also said that modems will be sold or leased and I took it that one has those two options. She mentioned that perhaps they will wave installation fees on certain businesses that make larger orders.

She also mentioned that they hope the price can come down by March. I do not know if this will happen though.

What was interesting was this lease/buy thing too. Why? Well, it is a different story obviously when allof a sudden telcos (ie. PacBell, GTE) will be lending out modems...this obviously doesn't exactly happen with your ol' analog stuff).

I think USRX will rake in the dough no doubt with their software upgradeable modems...they have too good a business machine/relationships with OEMS. The thing is that many many PCs don't and won't have upgradeable modems, and many of these guys will need to go to the telco to lease or buy. Alcatel and Westell have the inside tracks on PacBell as far as I know. Does anyone know if USRX has any plans to try to get telco business like Alcatel, WSTL, and Amati are doing? Or, are they going to be happy enough taking on PC OEMs?

And for yourself, steve green and any others if you so need it... Beth's number at PacBells Fastrak ADSL is 510 824-7761. Her e-mail address is bapadmo@pacbell.com

happy trials
ALL IMHO
