I have three ideas about that: one, he wanted a strong- minded woman, when they were hard to come by, to battle his mother; two, he idolized Theodore, and she was Teddy's favorite niece; and three, she had a certain charm in her younger years (we think of her as an old lady). After all, they had several children.
