This is a reply to the following message from the No-Politics thread:

"Richard...is there any reason why shorting should be political
My view would be that the smart money goes long and the lucky money goes short.

Look at this past Monday...the market was set to open up big on the upside. Without that plane crash the shorts would have gotten their heads handed to them.

For now there will be events that trigger sell offs. That plus the viewpoint that tech stocks are due for a modest pull back (not my viewpoint). For me being short right now would be a nervous position to be in. Investors are not selling into the rallies buy buying into the dips. That makes shorting right now a dangerous proposition.

Jerome, the shorting argument was veering toward the political, although one could argue that it was borderline.

As for the substance of the issue, I agree with you. People who trade long buy low and sell high. People who trade short sell high and buy low. I see no moral difference in which order those things are done. The same arguments that are used to say that you should never short because you might benefit from others' hardship can be used to say that you should never engage in trading of any kind.

I took money off the table recently because I thought that the market had gone too high too fast, and that I would have a chance to get back in at lower prices. Nevertheless, I was as happy as anyone to see the recent successes in Afghanistan, especially when I saw that they are apparently welcome to the Afghan people as well.
