True, the average age for A300 fleets is 9 to 15 years, so that particular airframe is still within the average for A300s. Also, note that in general aviation, with much older average airframes, and without as dedicated a maintenance regime, tails don't just fall off.

On the engine due for an overhaul, yes, but the latest findings are saying the engines were running fine, it was something else. Also, those engines are overhauled at pretty conservative time intervals, it would be unlikely that an engine would be operated until it was in a dangerous situation before being overhauled.
