Arab Knesset Members Say Israel Is Drifting Menacingly Toward Fascism
Occupied Jerusalem: 14 November, 2001 - (IAP News) - Arab lawmakers in the Israeli parliament, the Kneset, have warned that the Jewish state is drifting menacingly toward fascism.
The warning came after the Israeli minister of internal security Uzi Landau accused Arab lawmakers of being "a fifth column."
Landau, known for his Jewish supremacist views, claimed that Arab members of the Knesset were agents for the Palestinian Authority.
"They bear the citizenship of the state, and then they accuse it of racism and discrimination," Landau stated.
Hashem Mahamid, an Arab lawmaker from Um al-Fahem, described Landau's remarks as "virulent and manifestly racist."
"How would Landau feel if an American official accused Jewish members of the Congress of being a fifth column for voicing support of Israel? We were elected by our people, and our responsibility is to our people and to our conscience, not to Landau and his morbid whims."
Mahamid called on Landau to submit his resignation.
Landau neither apologized nor withdrew his remarks.
The latest vitriolic attack on Arabs Kneset members comes in the aftermath of a witch hunt campaign against Azmi Bishara, a member of the Knessett, who was stripped of his parliamentary immunity earlier this week to stand trial for praising Hizbullah and the Palestinian struggle against Israeli apartheid and occupation.
