That report has more sizzle than steak.

EMC deepsixed the MediaServer project and consolidated their networked storage R&D programs as key elements of AutoIS, the biggest R&D program in EMC's history, continue to move from R&D to sales and marketing.

Despite the two RIFS this year, EMC's corp of storage engineers continues to grow from 1,000 in 1998 to 2,000 in 1999 to 3,000 in 2000 to around 4,000 currently. Most of those engineers are working on software.

StorageScope is EMC's first software product that works without Symmetrix. It already supports IBM and NTAP products with Hitachi, Compaq and others to follow. It won't be the last software product targeted at the 60+% of the networked storage market that EMC has not yet penetrated.
