ALLENTOWN, Pa., Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Penn Treaty American Corporation (NYSE: PTA) today announced net income of $4.1 million for the third quarter of 2001. New premium dropped significantly during the third quarter, decreasing 74% to $7.1 million. Effective September 11, 2001, PTA discontinued the sale nationally of new long-term care insurance policies until it completed and received approval of its Corrective Action Plan with the Pennsylvania Insurance Department. The Company is continuing discussions with the Insurance Department.
Book value at September 30, 2001 grew to $12.25 per share. The Company's loss ratio, excluding the impact of the disability transaction, was 63.2% for the third quarter 2001, compared to 66.5% for the third quarter of 2000. Reductions in newly reported claims accounted for the favorable results.
