Frank,
<< since qcom has patents on the cornerstone of wcdma - the air interface - I don't see their lack of control over the rest of the system as a weakness ... their market share in wcdma is guaranteed by their patents and by the laws of physics.>>
Streeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetch !
Qualcomm has NO architectural control of the WCDMA air interface, whatsoever ... or the other air interfaces that are part of UMTS, or UMTS.
The 5 principles were the architectural foundation of their cdmaOne air interface (planned SVRC vocoder that may materialize in cdma2000 but not WCDMA aside) and are the foundation of cdma2000 as well.
You have, IMO, just attempted to rewrite the Gorilla Game.
They get paid to perpetuity on WCDMA (but then again so do the other holders of essential IP in WCDMA).
That makes them somewhat different than Apple, but it affords them NO control, and no competitive advantage that results from control of a proprietary architecture, and that is what makes cdma2000 technology adoption sooooooooooooooooo important, to Irwin, to you, to me, and every other Qualcomm investor.
It is what makes the technology adoption scorecard important, and right now it's sucking wind cdma wise.
<< Their market share in wcdma >>
They have No market share in WCDMA, and will have no market share in WCDMA other than what they'll scrap for on equal terms with other partners for some portion of the chip business.
WCDMA is a competitive technology to cdma2000, plain and simple.
The architecture of WCDMA (and UMTS) is controlled by a committee and the underlying fundamental architecture of WCDMA is probably closer to what Hedy Lamarr patented than the narrowband cdma than Qualcomm commercialized.
<< The value of architectural control is in keeping Monkeys from gaining market share >>
The value of architectural control is relegating wannabe gorillas to Chimp status.
"Chimps are companies that tried to become the Gorilla but just didn't get picked"
- G. A. M. pg 59 RFM -
Monkeys are simply companies that clone the gorilla architecture and offer products 100% compatible with the gorilla product at a discount.
- G. A. M. pg 58 RFM -
I think that you could possibly call Qualcomm a potential monkey equivalent (serf) on the gsm/wcdma chip side of their business but since there are no gorillas in the broad wireless industry, or in GSM, or (potentially) in 3GSM. Now if they should happen to achieve 2x market share their next nearest competitor you could make them a king and if they should become the market leader in GSM or 3GSM chips without 2x market share their next nearest competitor you could make them a prince.
<< by the laws of physics >>
You sound as silly with that "laws of physics" BS as Bill Frezza did back in 94, 95, and 96.
I sure hope you are not going to attempt to tell me that you can't accomplish handover in the asynchronous mode of WCDMA. That myth is already history, and WCDMA is really only in precommercial stages.
