re: Qualcomm MSM5100 peak data rates mystery solved

The case of the misleading press release

<< PCS upgrades to 1x (with 307) is 800M. Show me where I am wrong. >>

No 307 for 18 months or so and you neglected the well better than a billion PCS spent to get the net ready to upgrade to 1xRTT at 800M and at 144 kbps peak 50 to 70 kbps average.

Backtrack on the expenditures. Plent of articles last year or check the !0Q's/10K's

<< State of the art is 1X plus HDR for speed and capacity >>

Not according to Oliver Valente.

3G CDMA 2000 Migration and Launch

vcall.com

A fine presentation from a pioneering cdma2000 spokesman.

He helped clear up a few mysteries surrounding Qualcomm's claimed 307 kbps peak rates capability for the MSM5100 chipset.

* This capability requires cdma2000 Revision A.

* Sprint is launching phase 0 (zero) cdma2000

* Revision A should publish soon

* Sprint expects to make Revision A capabilities available by mid-year 2003

* Rev A will take peak data rates from 144 kbps to 288 and average rates from 50-70 kbps on PCS with phase 0 to 100 kbps

In addition he states that PCS will probably skip DO (and explains why) and instead migrate to DV by mid-year 2004 (which might be aggressive given state of the standard) with peak rates in the 3 to 5 kbps range.

I am assuming that if Sprint PCS skips DO, then so will Alltel, Bell mobility, Quest, Nextel, and several others.

LG in Korea has already stated that they might skip DO in Korea and wait for DV.

Noe let me get this straight. Qualcomm management told us that DoCoMo would launch with peak data rates of 64 kbps, but they launched with peak rates on the downlink of 384 kbps (well some say it is only 360 kbps right now).

By mid-2003 PCS will have peak data rates of 307 kbps.

By mid-2003 there will be several WCDMA networks launched according to the 3GSMers (but not Dr. No who nos everything he didn't invent) that will offer peak data rates of 384 kbps.

Am I Missing something here?

Best,

- Eric -
