Dan, its not necessary to have volume, you could see with your eyes that the markets contracting & the pattern is forming, a better idea than volume is to use a 5 period stochastic Realtick is %D & tradstation is slow stochastic ............when they go overbought & the pattern is setup & you have your 20 ema as yoru resistance thats fine......volume is already in the price because of the contraction of range, but yes volume does tend to dry up on range contraction as participants take profits & then re enter for continuation out of pattern, dogpiling adding fuel to fire......
