Banks and techs lead Singapore share rally by midday

sg.news.yahoo.com

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore shares made up for the lost opportunity to participate in Wednesday's Asian markets rally by putting on a broad-based surge of more than four percent by midday on Thursday.

A record rise in U.S. retail sales, progress in the Afghanistan war and solid earnings from technology bellwether Hewlett-Packard Co (HP) boosted banks and the likes of electronics contract maker Venture Manufacturing.

The benchmark Straits Times Index was up 4.38 percent or 59.78 points at 1,426.11 by the break.

Gainers overwhelmed losers by a ratio of 10 to one, with volume soaring to 302 million shares compared with 92 million at midday on Tuesday.

The Singapore stock market was closed for a holiday on Wednesday.
