Here's a network that is snaking its way across the continent, slowly but surely. The guy who steers the board of this one knows about squeezing bits out of photons. Yeah, yeah.. I know.. bandwidth must be wasted, yadi ya. Just ask 360, they will tell you all about it.

In any event, I found this release on Velocita on the carrierhotels.com board and thought it would interest some folks here.

Velocita Lights First Network Route

Dominion Telecom is first customer on Houston-to-Orlando route

By Rich Miller

Nov. 13, 2001 -- Velocita Corp. this week announced it has "lit" the first route of the company's nationwide broadband network.

Velocita, a broadband services provider headquartered in Falls Church, Va., hailed the activation of its Houston-to-Orlando route as a "significant milestone" in the deployment of its optical network infrastructure. The company also announced that Dominion Telecom, Inc. will be its first customer on the route.

"The Houston-to-Orlando light-up takes Velocita one step closer to fulfilling our promise of providing highest value optical network infrastructure and data services nationwide,'' said Buddy Pickle, Velocita CEO. "Velocita's strategy is to build responsibly in the present environment, yet remain focused on serving the longer term customer demand for increasing bandwidth.''

The 1,200-mile Houston-to-Orlando route provides service via points of presence in Houston, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Mobile, Tallahassee Jacksonville and Orlando.

Velocita said it expects to activate additional routes from Tulsa to Kansas City and St. Louis in the next month. The company recently signed an agreement with Cisco Systems, Inc., the Internet networking leader, to provide the optical and IP equipment to light and power Velocita's nationwide network.

Velocita Corp. is a nationwide broadband networks provider serving communications carriers, Internet service providers, and corporate and government customers.

Personally, I think that Bob needed a respite from all of that junk bond bullcrap, anyway, and a chance to get back into the business of networking.

Not surprisingly, Velocita is co-building their national network with, and for, AT&T.

Apparently, C. Michael had a few extra bucks left over, after all, after all of those cable acquisitions.
