Pulse Introduces New Planar Transformer and Inductor for Linear Technology Chipset
Compact, High-Efficiency Solution Saves Board Space and Increases Power Supply Performance
biz.yahoo.com
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 15, 2001--Addressing the increasing need for high-current, high-efficiency power supplies, Pulse has introduced two new magnetic components for use with Linear Technology's discrete component solution for telecommunications power modules.

The planar-design transformer and inductor are in a low-profile (8.26mm) surface-mount package that utilizes 40 percent less board space than conventionally wound transformers. This allows more functionality in the same amount of space for today's high-density telephony and networking devices.

Other applications for the new Pulse pair include industrial control systems, automotive electronics and heavy equipment systems utilizing 60-100 watt power supplies. Despite its small package size, these components offer the highest energy storage density on the market today. The surface-mount packaging of these devices is compatible with all contemporary pick-and-place processes.

Technical Information

Pulse part numbers PA0191T (planar transformer) and P1977T (planar inductor) were designed for use with Linear Technology's LT1681/LTC1698 chipset which uses a dual switch forward topology to provide an isolated 3.3V/20A output from a 48V input.

Additional application information on the Linear Technology chipset and Pulse planar solution can be found in the Linear Technology Design Note no. 261. The planar technology allows the device to be optimized to reduce AC losses and minimize leakage inductances while minimizing the physical size and height of the component.

An auxiliary winding on the primary side of the transformer provides the power for the LT1681 integrated circuit. The PA0191 transformer is also designed to meet basic insulation requirements. The P1977 inductor is manufactured with low resistance plates which enable this component to have low DC resistance and the highest energy storage density ((micron)J/cm3) of any inductor on the market.

``The Pulse planar solution enables the Linear Tech chipset to meet the power densities required for this discrete brick solution chipset,'' said Kurk Mathews, applications engineer for Linear Technology.

With its superior electro-magnetic compatibility, EMC compliance is easily achieved and the modules operate over a very broad temperature range, -40(degrees)C to +135(degrees)C.

Pricing and Availability

Part number PA1977T is priced at $2.30 for quantities of 10,000, while part number PA0191T is priced at $4.80 for 10,000 quantity. Contact Pulse directly for samples and volume pricing discounts. Refer to data sheet located on Pulse's Web site at pulseeng.com.
