A national ID card will be the end altogether.

As I mentioned yesterday, I keep hearing statements like that but no one every explains how they reach that conclusion.

The Federal Government will know what groceries you buy at the grocery store, the brand of condoms you use, and the flavor of beer you buy and how often, in real time, just for starters.

Is that the basis of your conclusion?

If so, I would argue that having national ID cards says nothing about what information on the card holder might be collected and stored by Uncle Sam. I can't imagine that Congress would ever authorize the Feds to maintain a data base on what beer anyone buys or that the people would stand for it if it did.

A national ID facilitates the collection of such data, but it is in no way either a prerequisite or an inevitable result. The FBI can track down such information now if they are sufficiently motivated.

There may be those who want to create such a comprehensive data base and see the national ID as a first step, but it's a long road from that first step requiring Congressional authorization and subject to Supreme Court review. It also assumes that Uncle Sam has the wherewithal to effectively create and manage such a huge database, a laugher, IMO.

I don't think we should decline to consider an ID out of fear of a slippery slope. The slippery slope is certainly a consideration, but hardly an automatic deal breaker.
