Bill, Re: "You think Intel does not check out AMD parts?"

I'm sure AMD and Intel "check out" each others' chips, for competitive reasons, or what have you. Dell and others, however, have little reason to spend a lot of time building systems around competitive parts, and continually waste man-hours trying to test them. What I think they may have is a small group (1-4 people) that keep up with industry technology, systems from their competitors, and general "nice-to-know" knowledge. What it sounds like you are suggesting is that Dell builds and validates a number of AMD based machines, just-in-case AMD starts selling big. The reason why that's a naive statement is because the costs of building and testing systems is so large, that it is only restricted to systems these OEMs intend to sell in volume. Therefore, don't expect any secret Athlon projects to emerge from these places all of a sudden.
