U.S. wireless operator VoiceStream has acquired the wireless LAN network of bankrupt MobileStar, according to consultancy firm Arena Intelligence Group. The MobileStar 802.11b network, which covers airport lounges, Starbucks coffee outlets and hotels on the West Coast of the U.S., New York City and Texas, has returned to business as usual. The services was shut off by MobileStar at the beginning of October after laying off its staff and making moves to sell its assets. Several European carriers have aggressively moved towards adding WLAN services to their offerings. Arena Intelligence sees the move as a chance for VoiceStream to get a head start in the mobile data business, offer more attractive services to businesses, and fill in network coverage. <<
