I do not think you quite understand representative government. We elect officials to various offices to conduct the business of government. Periodically, they stand for election, and therefore are sensitive to public opinion. They cannot do their jobs by following public opinion, which is ill- informed and fickle, but they have to be able to account for their actions in the long run. Even those who will not stand for re- election can be thwarted, because of the various checks in the system. For example, citizens can instigate congressional investigations by agitating loudly enough........
