BTW, interesting about not being "white" because you are Slovak. I assume you are exaggerating? I was using the word in the context of your readings. I was not "white" in the same way the Irish in your book weren't white. Did I experience discrimination for my ethnicity? You betcha. But not anywhere near in the class with discrimination against African Americans. It was enough, though, to know what it felt like and to get me active in the civil rights movement. I was chatting with my elderly father Sunday. He lives in Tucson and is a big Univ of Arizona fan so we were discussing the Arizona upsets in basketball at Madison Square Garden last weekend. He started ruminating about how his buddies formed a basketball team but weren't allowed to play in any of the local leagues. They had to drive to Pa. and NY to play other Slovak teams (from NJ). Then, when the league finally let them in, the priest dictated that they couldn't play with the Protestants. Dad went on and on about the first of the Slovaks who got to play hoops in college. I had not heard that particular story before. That wasn't so very long ago... It sounds from your Provincial Council cite like we've always recorded immigrants. Karen
