Re: 4 way and 8 way servers are soft right now, but one ways and two ways are hot (overall, servers were up for them, YOY 24%). Could be an opening for AMD.
Ah, you're starting to get it.
The thing is, 99% of servers are I/O constrained once they get to the point of dual AMD or Intel CPUs.
Fewer and fewer machines with more than 2 CPUs are required, but dual processor machines make sense for just about everyone.
If nothing else, just about any user will see a substantial performance and usability gain when their realtime virus scanner is only tying up one CPU leaving the other one available for the user's application.
AMD has new dual processor boards coming out next month from Asus, Abit, MSI, Gigabyte, and Tyan.
AMD also has an SMP version of Duron coming - it would be in the interests of both companies to educate the public to the benefits of dual processors for desktops, which would double the demand for CPUs... |
