Tech shares fall, led by a lackluster earnings report from Applied Materials.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Applied Materials' earnings report tempered gains on the Nasdaq Thursday after the world's largest maker of semiconductor equipment missed analysts' estimates for its fourth quarter.

Applied Materials earned 3 cents per share in its fourth quarter, below the 77 cents it earned a year ago and a penny below estimates. The company reported sales of $1.26 billion, 57 percent below the $2.92 billion a year ago.

Applied Materials said it may post a loss in its first quarter as it sees revenue falling 20 percent below its fourth-quarter amount.
