I attended a conference in California and spent a great deal of time with several fellows from SBC Communications. They say that ISDN is doing well, that there is no cable modem competition from TCI ("TCI can't find their *ss"); TCI doesn't have enough capacity---what they provide is the equivalent of LA traffic in 2-lanes.
That the merger with T will go thru----the accepted arguments will be based on the need for size to compete with the Bell Atlantic-Nynex merged company, as well as global competitors such as British Telecom and Nippon Telecom.
Pac-Tel has 200,000 customers and is growing quickly, surveys show that 27% of population want internet service, so large untapped market.
Wireless is no competition, T also has wireless box, which they will acquire in the merger.

Good luck.
