Robert Lutz, recently hired as Vice Chairman to invigorate General Motor's product line-up, is taking over as Chairman of GM's North American operations. Gary Cowger will become the President of GM North America. Both of these posts were held by Ron Zarrella, who resigned to return to Bausch & Lomb (left them in 1994 to join GM) as Chairman and CEO. Parenthetically, the changes obviously broaden Lutz's role, allowing him to exert influence at GM well beyond just product development.
