Edmond, I am still familiarizing myself with what USU does, but I think they have partially mothballed their own gaseous diffusion plants because there is so much enriched uranium around to convert from weapons grade to reactor grade. As I recall, gaseous diffusion uses the gas, unranium hexaflouride, and lets it diffuse through a long series of filters, and gradually the fissionable uranium reaches a high enough concentration over the non-radioactive isotope to make reactor fuel. This can also be done with gas centrifuges, and there is something I don't know anything at all about that involves lasers.

I don't know at which point USU takes over the enrichment process but maybe I can learn it from their website. I think "yellowcake" is uranium oxide, concentrated from ore.

But USU seems to sit right at the threshold of supplying fuel for reactors, and is the largest of only four companies or government organizations world wide that does this.

Edit: "yellowcake" seems to be uranium diuranate--and I never got that far in organic chemistry to know what a uranate is.
