Rumsfeld says bin Laden probably in Afghanistan

Friday November 16, 06:05 PM

NORTH CHICAGO, Illinois (Reuters) - U.S. Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has said Saudi-born dissident Osama bin Laden is probably still in Afghanistan and he did not believe he has fled to neighbouring Pakistan.

"There isn't any reason to believe he is in Pakistan. There is every reason to believe he is in Afghanistan," Rumsfeld told reporters on Friday on a visit to a naval training station near Chicago.

However, Rumsfeld said there were many places bin Laden could go, pointing out that he had previously lived in Sudan and in Somalia.

Earlier, Iran Radio reported that bin Laden, the chief suspect for the Sept. 11 hijacked aircraft attacks on the United States, had probably fled from Afghanistan to Pakistan.
