Congressman Dan Burton on bioterrorism...

Scientist: U.S. Lacks Bioterror Research Resources
dailynews.yahoo.com

Committee Chairman Dan Burton, an Indiana Republican, spent a great deal of the hearing pressing the panel of experts on why they were not devoting more resources to seeking alternative treatments for bioterrorism, such as homeopathic remedies or vitamin C.

But the government scientists said that while alternative medicine may have its uses, bioterrorism is not among them.

``Bioterror infections are a special case,'' said Dr. Stephen Straus, director of the National Center of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. ``Simply stated, they can kill us before we can arm ourselves fully to defend against them.''

While vitamins or natural substances may prove to have a healing role in some illnesses, he said, it would be wrong to rely on anything but established drugs and vaccines for these especially virulent and deadly illnesses.

``It would be unethical and dangerous to withhold proven drugs and vaccines in order to see whether the homeopathic remedies protect people who become exposed,'' Straus said.
