You keep on missing a deceptively simple point. The overlap is created by hybrid SAN/NAS products like Celerra HighRoad and Celerra SE.

Start with the basic definition of the log-structured file system then move to the basic definition of SAN (BLOCK) and NAS (FILE) and you'll find your way to understanding why even NTAP's CEO has finally conceded that SAN and NAS distinctions are blurring.

ESCON is the original SAN environment. Fibre Channel SANs are already second generation so even though you don't realize it, you sound absolutely stupid trying to frame everything in SAN vs NAS terms especially when you consider that more than 50% of the world's corporate data still resides in mainframe disk/tape environments in 20/80 proportion.

NAS was invented by Sun more than 15 years ago. Note that IBM is expected to gained the most market share in NIS this year and that Sun and Veritas have teamed up to enter the NAS market.

You have to be a total moron not to even make that damn effort to move away from your rigid and unworkable classifications of SAN and NAS that can no longer explain why NTAP continues to lose market share.
