politicians in favor of federalizing airline security.

How does this "usurp" your liberties? One of the government's functions is policing. Airport security, especially in light of terrorist threats to airline safety, is a policing function. If it can be done effectively and more economically (but most importantly, effectively) on an outsourced basis, then I'm all for private enterprise doing it if the controls and standards are tight enough. But even then it's a stretch - it is, after all, a policing function. OTOH, if private enterprise proves itself incompetent in performing the function, can we take the risk of letting them continue to screw it up, risking our own safety and national security? I don't think so.
