The companies you mention, mostly resource extraction companies (many Third world oountries have mining operations or plantations) like Exxon, Chevron etc. do not add anything to the non-resource economy.

Wages paid to local employees don't add to the "non-resource" economy? Sure they do. So do local tax payments, royalties, purchases of supplies. Third world countries are delighted if someone like Exxon, Chevron, etc. shows up to drill and invest and for good reason.
