Former Afghani King to return for peace talks Afghanistan's former king Mohammed Zahir Shah intends to return soon to the capital Kabul, for talks with the Northern Alliance on a new government for the country. Posted :Sat, 17 Nov 2001 10:50 AEDT abc.net.au His office says it should not take long before it will be safe for Zahir Shah to travel from Rome to Afghanistan, for the first time since he was ousted from power in 1973. Afghanistan is facing a power vacuum, after the Taliban's retreat from most of the key strategic cities, in the wake of the US-led strikes. The former ruling militia is accused of hiding Osama bin Laden, who has blamed for the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.
