'Possible' that the military is/was in with the PRI, hey bet on it - not a monolith though, Gallardo wasn't the only 'moral' [oh man that concept again] individual in the military ... i've spent time in areas under contention, and in one case it was a general who really did seem to be keeping the peace in what appeared to be as fair a manner as possible under the circumstances [enough qualifiers there?-g-] ... the one who preceded him had the opposite reputation, but he was replaced after an incident that made the papers ... so it's not all one way, more complex than that ... and with the PRI out of power, much will be changing ... hard to find completely clean hands in some long-time disputes too, one time i was very embarrassed by 'my side', broken promises etc ... i had the luxury of walking away, and took it, many others don't have that, or don't realise that they have that
No, haven't read Oppenheimer's book, but i've enjoyed his pieces in papers, New York Times i think? ... no, Miami Herald ... he knows Castañeda fairly well as i recall ... with this internet thing, does anybody read books any more? - our lights just went out for a while, maybe reversion to candles would revive literature -g-
[edit] - ah i recall you posting this before - #reply-16672534 ... true about the limpiabotas, i've heard that elsewhere ... lots of places you could do nothing if you didn't support the PRI, and actively, not just fail to oppose it |
