Thanks Nick and Dan for providing info related to real world situations in determining what may or may not slow down quote and charting systems. Hopefully other traders will weigh in with their experiences also.

Continuing in this area, how are you able to determine that the quotes you are seeing are not say 5 seconds behind (I just picked that number arbitrarily)when running background programs and not running those programs? I am able to detect differences between different quote providers and their servers but have never been comfortable with determining what is the total latency in quotes received via the internet. I finally dropped a pay service when free Datek streaming quotes consistently were more timely. I notice now that Schwab is behind Datek quotes.

Two other areas you mentioned are of interest to me also. Dual processors and silent fans. Are you satisfied that you can assign different tasks to the processors even if the programs are not multithreaded? The silent fans seem to run at a much slower rpm to accomplish the sound reduction which would seem to indicate they also move less air.

Thanks in advance for any comments you or others may have.

Bob
