Ah, the agent provocateur hypothesis !
Perverse enough to be interesting, but
a bit of overkill, don't you think ?

Then there's the smokescreen hypothesis -
the first victim was intended, the rest were
a screen. The list of possibilities is endless,
but it seems clear that the intent of the perpetrator
was not to commit mass murder but rather to instill fear,
and so I doubt there's a Mideast connection here - too subtle.
