China duplicates organs from stem cells: Report

BEIJING: China has claimed a breakthrough in the study of human organ cloning by successfully regenerating and duplicating gastro-intestinal organs by culturing stem cells.

This follows China's success in skin regeneration and could prove to be a valuable way of treating gastro-intestinal diseases via regenerating gastric and intestinal mucosa tissues, the official China Daily said today.

Xu Rongxiang, a distinguished researcher in organ regeneration and duplication by culturing stem cells, announced his new development yesterday in Beijing.

Xu and his team first cultured mouse gastric intestinal tissue in a culture fluid which contained Gastro-Intestinal Capsules (GIC), a material used to stimulate stem cells, which further divided into specialised cells.

He said that after 18 days, cloned cells had multiplied and had grown quite well.

The research confirmed that GIC can actively improve the regeneration and replication of gastric-intestine mucosa and help repair mucosa tissue, Xu said.

The technology has already been put into use. A medicine that aims to protect mucus and insure the physiological functions of mucosa will soon be in market, the paper said.

Meanwhile, technology to treat gastric and intestinal ulcers is under clinical study.

Xu is also a leading scientist of skin regeneration burn therapy. Using the technology of gene regulation and original cell structures, he fulfilled skin regeneration by means of stem cell culture, and has successfully treated various skin burn injuries.
