Observations, My lady loves to shop, so have accompanied her on shopping trips the last few weekends. Advantage to me is she is a very frugal lady, so $$ risk is low, ggg, while I was able to window shop prices on PC's, HDTV's which I will be interested in if prices drop after holidays and also looking for a particular trading book. Also wanted to compare traffic in Malls to other years.
Agree with observations of your poster that places with heavily discounted sales were rather busy. And they were real sales, selling merchandise (like winter coats) in season at heavy discounts of 30=50% off. Otherwise Mall traffic appeared off about 20-30%. Electronics sections rather deserted at most stores. Also noticed not a lot of folks weighed down with purchases except at the deep discount sales. This weekend covered all major malls in an area containing about 1.6 million people. Since the area is in a drought, weather has been nice for six weeks, temps slightly above normal, so I would not think weather was a variable either way.
BTW, overheard conversation that was humorous to us : Man was complaining loudly and with some profanity to his mate that "Who in the %%$# would pay $179 for this bedspread, that's way too much %&^*# money" To which his mate replied "Well, maybe people that work at [deleted]" The [deleted] place of employment is where wife and I work (and a very good place to work).
And we didn't buy that overpriced item either, LOL!
Finally, have also been watching housing prices for the kids who are house hunting. Noticed a lot of price reductions lately on houses on the market for awhile, though that could be a seasonal thing with the holidays approaching?
Would be interested in anyone else's observations from shopping etc in their areas. Better to observe with our own eyes than rely of possibly cooked statistics.
Best Regards,
