It is my understanding that the Liberty Bell was rung on special occasions for many years.

It is an important symbol of freedom. The myth that it is "crappy" has taken on a symbolic life of it's own.

It is a very odd fact, but true, that the Liberty Bell was never actually rung at any significant event in American history. Last week my older son asked me why we have as one of our great national symbols a crappy bell that cracked the first time it was rung, and had no other significance. My only explanation is that it's neat looking, so it has taken on a symbolic life completely independent of its actual life.
